The curtain came down on the indoor season on Saturday last as day three of the National Indoor Championships took place at Athlone IT.

St Peter’s AC had three athletes in the U13 60m hurdles and all three were there on merit as they qualified through the Leinster Championships.

The best performance of the trio came from Ronan Deary who ran superbly to finish third in his heat and qualify as one of the two quickest runner-ups.

In the final, Ronan ran really well in a top class field. Unfortunately, he finished outside the medals but gained a new PB of 10.19 and gained valuable experience in doing so.

Sean Allen had the unfortunate experience of breaking early from the blocks in his heat. At U13 level, that results in a caution but Sean was rattled and really struggled after the restart.

Niamh Brady, who is also a brilliant hurdler, didn’t get her usual fast start and was slow out of the blocks. She recovered well but unfortunately, over a distance of 60m, there isn’t much room for error and she just missed out on a place in the final.

With the indoor season now over, athletes are anxiously waiting for the outdoor track and field season to begin with the Pre-Louth championships just two weeks away.

Everybody at St Peter’s AC would also like to extend its sympathies to North East Runners on the untimely death of fellow athlete Andy Califf. May he rest in peace.
