NEFL | Brendan bags winner as Blues heap Mór misery on Bellurgan
NEFL Premier Division | Muirhevnamor 1–0 Bellurgan United
Brendan Hughes scored the only goal of the game as reigning champions Muirhevnamor got back to winning ways against Bellurgan United on Friday night.
Muirhevnamor, beaten heavily by Newfoundwell last Sunday, needed the three points to kickstart their season and they opened brightly with Hughes breaking the deadlock inside the opening 10 minutes.
Billy Smith and Gary Clarke combined neatly in the approach and Hughes made no mistake, his finish from the edge of the penalty area beating Robbie Arthur all ends up.
Bellurgan, whose form has nosedived in recent weeks, leading to the departure of manager Wayne Conroy earlier in the week, struggled to fashion any real opportunities with Ciaran Sheelan seeing their best effort of the first half turned away by Michael Cooney.
The peninsula side dictated possession for large spells after the break but Cooney had a stress free evening with Sheelan again, and Ray Finnegan, passing up opportunities.
With Padraig Hearty absent through injury and Smith yet to go through the gears, Muirhevnamor still look some way off their free flowing best but a welcome clean sheet ensured them a big win which they will be hoping to use as a launchpad for the rest of the campaign.
