NEFL | Beeny bags a hat trick as Woodview Over-35s hit Carrick for six

NEFL Over-35 Cup | Carrick Rovers 2–6 Woodview Celtic

Gerry Matthews and Paul McArdle were both on the scoresheet for Woodview in their Over-35 Cup win over Carrick

Woodview cruised into the next round of the NEFL Over-35 Cup after hitting Carrick Rovers for six last Friday night.

Kevin Magee’s side were always in control and Gerry Matthews opened the scoring early on with a fine finish after good work from Damien Connor.

Woodview doubled their lead shortly after. Seamus O’Hagan raced onto a through ball from Dermot Grier only to be upended inside the penalty area and Ray McCann slotted home the spot kick.

The visitors controlled the game but they were rocked when Carrick reduced the arrears against the run of play to make it 2–1.

However, with the first half drawing to a close, Matthews restored Woodview’s two-goal advantage with his second goal of the game from close range.

The result was put to bed in the opening minutes of the second half when Paul Warnock swung in a corner Kick and Paul McArdle headed powerfully to the net.

Woodview continued to pile the pressure on the home defence and a brilliant ball from Niall O’Hagan set up McArdle on the edge of the area and he hammered home a daisy cutter.

Carrick again reduced the deficit when a rocket was hammered past Ray McCann — who swapped places with Gavin Macken in the Woodview nets — to make it 5–1.

The final word was left to McArdle, though, as he completed his hat trick with another sweet header after a terrific cross from Benny Ralph picked him out.

WOODVIEW: Gavin Macken, Ray McCann, Benny Ralph (Jason Crawley), Shane English, Dermot Grier, Paul Warnock, Damien Connor, Paul McArdle, Niall O’Hagan, Seamus O’Hagan (Colm McConville), Gerry Matthews.
