Stabannon pushed all the way by St Fechin’s

Stabannon Parnells 1–11 St Fechin’s 2–5

St Fechin’s Ladies were narrowly defeated by table toppers Stabannon Parnells on a glorious Sunday morning in mid-Louth.

In a fantastic game, St Fechin’s ladies started at a blistering pace with Roisin Kavanagh kicking the opening score, followed quickly by another point from Rachel Kinch.

Stabannon responded by knocking over three points in a row from Rachel McNally, Meabh O’Hare and Amy Malone but Catherine McGlew managed to maintain a lead for the Fechin’s by slapping the ball into the back of the net after a shot from Sara Moore dropped short.

It was quickly followed by a goal — from Grace Rogers — and a point from Stabannon but Rebecca Howell responded for the visitors by hitting the back of the net to end half with the sides level.

Stabannon proved to be the stronger team in the second half but overall there was very little in it with only three points separating the teams at the end of the match.

Danielle Sharkey, Grace Rogers, Grace Lynch, Meabh O’Hare and Amy Malone added their name to the scoresheet with points for the home side.

This victory gives Stabannon four wins and a draw from their five games with two remaining fixtures to play, against St Brides on Wednesday, May 10th at 7.45pm in Stabannon and at home to Newtown Blues on Sunday, May 14th at 11am.

St Fechin’s started the second half strongly but their momentum quickly dwindled in the scorching sun. With 15 minutes to go the match was all square but the more experienced Parnells team took control, scoring three unanswered points to pull clear for the win.

Coirin kicks a hat-trick for Cooley

A strong second half performance gave Cooley the two points against Roche Emmets. Coirin Rice — who helped herself to a hat trick — Lauren Boyle and Niamh Rice were all on target for the peninsula side.

Flood stars as Pat’s storm to victory in Clogherhead

Dreadnots 2–8 St Patrick’s/Cuchulainn Gaels 3–12

A game of two halves, which was largely controlled by a strong wind, ended with the peninsula side coming out on top with a hard fought victory in Clogherhead on Thursday night.

Dreadnots opened the scoring with a goal after three minutes before Catherine Rice responded for the visitors with a point.

The hosts, however, dominated the rest of the half, adding seven more points to build up a strong lead, some of them coming from questionable frees.

The Pats fought hard to get on the scoreboard with Aoife Quigley making strong runs but the Dreadnots defence stood strong.

Dreadnots knew they needed to make the advantage of the wind count before the interval but it was the Pat’s who grabbed the final two scores of the half with Catherine O’Connor and Kate Flood firing over to leave seven in it, 1–7 to 0–3.

Catherine Rice and Catherine O’Connor reduced it to five with scores just after the restart before the Dreadnots responded with a point at the other end.

Catherine O’Connor hit the back of the net after a scramble to bring it back to a three-point game and when Pat’s won a free from the the resulting kick out, Kate Flood powered through the Dreadnots defensive line to smash the ball home and bring the sides level for the first time in the match.

Flood edged her side in front but the Dreadnots hit back when a mistake in the Pat’s backline led to the home side’s second goal that put them back ahead with 10 minutes gone in the half.

Sub Grace Treanor quickly responded with a point and Kate Flood began to take control, adding a point on the 15th minute before another storming run four minutes later ended with her powering a shot into the back of the net.

That goal gave the visitors momentum and they finished out the match by adding four further points through Flood, Catherine Rice, Katie Hoey and Caoimhe Breen to secure a 3–12 to 2–8 victory.
