With second placed Athenry athlete, Liam Shaw, having a best of 12.47m, Karlis was an outstanding winner and a well deserving National Champion for 2017.

In the U18 girls’ section, Emma Cheshire was a worthy silver medalist in the long jump with a best jump of 5.20m, just seven centimeters below her PB and good enough for second place in the national competition.

Liene Kaugare came agonisingly close to a medal with a fourth place finish in the U16 shot putt with a 10.50m throw while Aeyla Orr had a PB in the U14 high jump with 1.40m but just missed out on the medals on this occasion.

Elsewhere, Karen Costello was the fifth lady and first Over 40 home at the Eirgrid Dunboyne Four Mile Road Race on Sunday in a speedy 23.46.

The next Dunleer AC lady was Róisín Donnelly in 28.35 and third lady was Nicola Courtney who finished in just under the 30 minute mark.

Meanwhile, at the BHAA K-Club 10k on Saturday, Mark Carroll finished in 38:52 with his dad, Patrick Carroll, coming home in 51:41.
