Louth’s U17 hurlers marched into the semi-finals of Division Five of the Celtic Challenge following this impressive victory over Mayo at Abbotstown GAA Centre in Dublin last Saturday afternoon.

Having started four of the previous group games as goalkeeper, Naomh Moninne’s Darren Geoghegan filled an important outfield position for this quarter final and once again he was influential in guiding his side to victory, scoring 1–7 of his side’s tally.

The Wee County played with the assistance of the strong breeze in the first half and grabbed two goals in this period through Ultan McEneaney and Sean Kerrisk.

Points from Geoghegan (0–6), Paul McEvoy, Philip Tynan and Padraic Fallon had Mark Stephenson’s side leading at the break, 2–9 to 1–2.

The second half proved to be a low scoring affair as both sides struggled with the elements but good Louth defending managed to keep the westerners scoreless until five minutes from the end when they grabbed a consolation goal.

A goal and a point from top scorer Geoghegan was the total return for Louth in the second half as they ran out worthy winners to set up a semi-final meeting with Roscommon on Saturday afternoon in Abbottstown.
