GOLF | Week to remember for Ciaran Johnson at Dundalk Golf Club

Eight handicapper claims the Irwin Lockington Salver

Dundalk Golf Club

Eight handicapper Ciaran Johnson certainly had a week to remember at Dundalk Golf Club last week.

After finishing second in last Wednesday’s Open Singles Stableford competition he went one better on Sunday to claim the Irwin Lockington Salver.

The winner’s podium looked a long way off on Sunday when Johnson stood on the fourth tee after double-bogeys at the first and third but he parred the index one and then went par-birdie-par-birdie-par-birdie-par over the next seven holes before parring his way from the 11th to the 15th.

He then double-bogeyed the par four 16th but recovered to finish with back to back pars and record a nett score of 68 have gone out in 35 nett and returned home in 33 nett. That was enough to pip Colm Coburn (20) by one shot on count back after both had finished on 68.

Peter Rogers (2) with a one-under par 71 returned the best gross while category winners were Vincent Conlon (7), Ollie Reilly (16) and Fergal McKenna (18).

Earlier in the week, Brendan Lawlor (2) shot 38 points to win Wednesday’s Open Singles Stableford by two points from Johnson.

Matchplay competitions

The various internal matchplay competitions have either been decided or have reached the final stage after several months of action.

Maurice Murphy has won the 2017 Gold Medal after beating Ciaran Sheridan in the final while Seamus Bailey captured the Carolan Cup by defeating Ray Pepper in the decider. In the Harry Walsh Cup, Joe Flanagan and Benny O’Shaughnessy are set to meet in the final.

This year saw the introduction of four category matchplay competitions which proved very popular.

In the Senior competition, Eoin Murphy emerged as the winner while Declan Ward beat Pat Daly to claim the Minor title.

The other two categories have still to be decided with Neil Mullooly due to meet Fergal Harte in the Junior final while Stephen Buckingham will face Pat Curran in the Intermediate final.

There are also two major foursomes competitions during the year and in the Men’s Foursomes the final will see Sean Gallagher and C McClenaghan meeting Michael McDermott and Paul Morrison.

The Mixed Foursomes has also reached the final stage with Mickey and Mags Coburn scheduled to meet Clem Walshe and Oonagh Quinn.
