GOLF | McDonnell doubles up at Dundalk Golf Club
Stableford victory — and Winter League success on same day!
The Dundalk Golf Club Tiernan’s Centra Blackrock Winter League successfully concluded in beautiful sunshine on Sunday as the 16 matchplay finals took place.
The winners, who are named in the results section below, received their prizes afterwards in the clubhouse. The club would like to thank Tiernan’s Centra Blackrock for their generous sponsorship of the Winter League.
The finals were played as part of the last 13 Hole Singles Stableford competition of the winter season and it proved to be a double success for Gavin McDonnell as he not only won his final but he took the overall prize in the competition.
The 19 handicapper has been playing steadily over the last few months but it all came good for him on Sunday as he shot 30 points to edge out Vincent Conlon (8) on countback.
McDonnell’s round included five three-point holes, seven two-point holes and one one-point hole and that was enough to give him his first overall win of 2017.
Conlon had the consolation of taking the Category One prize while Martin Farrelly (13) took Category Two and Alan Uzell won Category Three. Neal MacKell claimed the Gross Prize with 25 points.
The first Golfer of the Year competition for 2017, the Gold Medal Qualifier, takes place this weekend and slots are still available on both the Saturday and Sunday timesheets.
Entries are now being accepted for the club foursomes and club mixed foursomes competitions. The entry fee is €10 and entries can be made via the entry box in the club bar. The closing date for entries is Monday, April 17 at 8pm.
