Gannon facing lengthy spell on the sidelines with knee injury

Dundalk right-back Sean Gannon is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after damaging his knee in the 3–1 win over Drogheda United on Friday night.

Gannon was carried off on a stretcher following a late tackle by Drogheda United’s Marc Griffin and speaking to Dundalk Sport afterwards, the 25-year-old couldn’t hide his disappointment.

“They’re saying it’s medial knee ligaments but I just have to stay positive and hopefully I can get back as quick as possible to help the team.

“It is what it is,” he continued. “It’s just part and parcel of the game but for myself, it’s disappointing.

“It’s probably a bit early to know what the damage is but these things happen. The main thing is that the team went on to win the game.”

Griffin was booked for the tackle but Gannon said that his former teammate was in no way to blame for the injury.

“Listen, it wasn’t a bad tackle at all,” he said. “ It was 50, 50 and it was caused by whatever way my knee went.

“I’ve been lucky enough with injuries over the years. I’ve started picking up a few in recent times,” he continued.

“I’ll stay in touch with the physios here — who are brilliant — and they’ll guide me in the right direction. I’ll just have to rehabilitate it well and try and get back with the team.”

Dundalk’s start to the season has been hampered by uncharacteristic injuries to key players but Gannon feels there is enough depth in the squad to cope.

“I don’t know how we’re getting so many injuries,” said Gannon. “We’ve had so many but it’s up to the lads that have came in to step up to the mark and get the points on the board for us.

“We’ve got a strong squad and Stephen has brought in brilliant players who are hungry to play so we’ll be okay.”
