GAA | Paddy Sheelan Cup quarter-final Round-Up

Pat’s and Brides advance as Clans and O’Mahony’s go out

St Patrick’s 0–14 Clan na Gael 0–6

Just days after suggesting that St Patrick’s will be there or thereabouts in the hunt for this year’s Joe Ward, Paddy Keenan played a major part in helping the Lordship side into the semi-finals of the Paddy Sheelan Cup.

The teams went in level at 0–4 apiece at the break with Billy Smith, JJ Quigley, Mark McGeown and Robbie Curran all on target for the Castletown side.

However, Keenan, as well as the ultra experienced Evan White, did most of the damage for Pat’s, who took a grip of the game with three scores in as many minutes at the start of the second half.

The 2010 All-Star ended up with eight of his side’s 14 points on the day, leaving the Clans to wonder what might have been had a couple of goal opportunities in the first half went their way.

Sean O’Mahony’s 0–9 St Brides 0–11

Sean O’Mahony’s made their exit from the Paddy Sheelan Cup at the weekend, going down by two points to St Brides as David Reilly’s men maintained their 100% record in this year’s competition by beating the county champions for a second time.

The lads from the Quay seemed lacklustre in the first half with Ben McLaughlin’s point from play their only answer to six points from the Knockbridge side.

After conceding two more points in the early stages of the second half, Conor Finnegan floated the ball between the posts for a superb score and that was quickly followed by two great scores by the McLaughlin’s, Keith and Ben.

The brothers kicked two more good scores from open play in reply to a Brides point before Conor Finnegan also kicked two more from the ground to bring it to a one-point game.

The Brides edged two in front again before Ben McLaughlin cut the deficit to the minimum with a fine point on the turn, this time with the left peg.
The game was up for grabs at this stage but it was the Brides who added the last score of the game to book their place in the semi-finals.
