GAA | Cooley Kickhams to host fourth annual Michael ‘Bammel’ Malone Blitz
U12 GAA blitz will take place this weekend
The fourth annual Michael ‘Bammel’ Malone U12 GAA blitz will take place on June 10th at Cooley Kickhams GFC’s Fr McEvoy Park.
The blitz, which this year will see see 24 teams from 11 different counties and three different provinces in action, is held in memory of the legendary Cooley Kickhams clubman who passed away five years ago.
‘Bammel’ was an integral part of the greatest Cooley Kickhams team the club has ever produced. Each year from 1970 to 1979, Kickhams figured in the senior championship final, winning five of them, including a three-in-a-row from ’76 to ‘78.
There were also numerous Cardinal O’Donnell and Old Gaels Cup wins and appearances in two Leinster Club Championship finals. Bammel’s big day came in 1977 when, wearing the No 12 jersey as usual, he captained Kickhams in their senior championship final win over their great rivals, Newtown Blues.
Since its inception, the event has become one of the top of its kind in the northeast with teams booking their place from as early as Christmas.
The Malone family’s hospitality to all of the teams that compete is unbelievable with refreshments available for a small fee that goes towards a charity of the family’s choice.
With nearly 500 children involved, there will be some great young talent on show and hopefully a future All Ireland winner who will remember the ‘Bammel’ Malone Blitz as a stepping stone to their success!
