GAA | Combination town side edges out the Gaels in thrilling U16 final
Louth U16 Division 2B Final
O’Mahony’s/Na Piarsaigh/Dowdallshill 3–9 Dundalk Gaels 2–11
The Sean O’Mahony’s/Na Piarsaigh/Dowdallshill U16 team clinched the U16 Louth Division 2B title after a thrilling final with Dundalk Gaels in Darver on Wednesday night.
In a hard fought match, in which the Gaels never got ahead, the combination side were leading 1–5 to 0–5 at half time thanks to a well taken goal by Cody McAreavey and four sweetly struck points from Terence Kelly’s left foot.
The Gaels did raise a green flag early in the second half but two great goals from Oisin Marron and Ross McNally gave the O’Mahony’s/Na Piarsaigh/Dowdallshill lads a seven-point lead.
Five Gaels points in a row cut the deficit back to two but a brace of quickfire points from Ross McNally and Cody McArevey, his third from play, left four between the teams with time almost up.
A controversial goal right at the death cut the lead down to the bare minimum but when the final whistle was blown the O’Mahony’s/Na Piarsaigh/Dowdallshill side emerged victorious by just one point.
Goalkeeper Precious Kent made a couple of important saves while there was some tenacious tackling from the whole defence, especially Oisin McCumiskey, Lee Byrne and Cian McEvoy.
Up front, Cody McAreavey kicked 1–3 while Terence Kelly landed five points.
SEAN O’MAHONY’S/NA PIARSAIGH/DOWDALLSHILL: Precious Kent, Dillon Cahill, Lee Byrne, Eddie Maguire, Oisin McCumiskey, Cian McEvoy, Dean Carrol, Oisin Marron (1–0), Argans Jucrinkous, Conor Smith Redmond, Terence Kelly (0–5, 4f), Ross McNally (1–1), Thomas Rice, Cody McAreavey (1–3), Liam Gordon.
