There was more sporting glory for DkIT recently when Ronan Brennan claimed yet another Irish Inter-Varsity Surfing title.

Ronan, a sports scholarship student in his fourth and final year of BA (Hons) in Social Care, successfully defended his Stand-Up Paddle Board title. This was Ronan’s fourth successive victory in this, the highlight of the Inter-Varsity Surfing calendar.

Hosted this year by the University of Limerick’s Surf Club, the event took place at Ireland’s surfing mecca, the West Clare town of Lahinch.

Ronan made the long drive from Dundalk determined to retain his title for the fourth and final time but the high winds and wave swells, mixed with snow showers, ensured very challenging conditions.

Yet, it is circumstances such as these in which expertise, experience and training come into their own. The skill in harnessing nature’s power to drive rider and board across the waves is both impressive and, as the picture below shows, visually stunning.

Drawing on his 25 years of competition around Ireland and abroad the DkIT man prevailed once again over his rivals to claim victory for the North-East’s premier third-level institute.
