FOOTBALL | Rampart cause a shock on opening night of Summer League

Marsella hits a double as champions Muirhevnamor are beaten

The 2017 Fyffes Dundalk Summer League kicked off last week with the first round of games taking place from Tuesday to Thursday.

Rampart Celtic caused the first shock of the new campaign with a 3–1 win over league champions — and red hot favourites — Muirhevnamor on the opening night of the season.

Defensively sound throughout, a goal from Dave Culligan and a brace from Luca Marsella gave Kieran Pickering’s side the three points with Sean Conlon hitting a consolation for the Mor.

Rampart will be looking to follow up that win when they face Walshestown at their new home ground of Auto Assure Park on the Rock Road this Wednesday night.

Shamrocks FC made the long trip to newcomers Walshestown a comfortable one on Wednesday night, running out winners by nine goals to nil.

Billy Smith helped himself to a hat-trick while Stephen Fisher (2), Conor Macken, Jimmy Cooney, Robbie Mackin and Caolan Dines were also on target for Leslie Callan’s side.

The Fatima outfit take on Quay Celtic this Thursday in what should be an entertaining affair after the Point Road side also opened their season with a victory.

A brace apiece for Cormac Reid and Shaun O’Connor, allied to goals from Alan McCartney, Ian Devine and Shane McKenna gave Robbie Rafferty’s side a 7–3 win over Fane FC on Wednesday night last.

Former Redeemer Celtic striker Woicheck Gladzy and Dylan Thornton (2) were on target for the Tony Kellegher managed outfit.

The final game of the week took place on Thursday night when another new team, Setanta, took on Doolargy All Stars and it was Dayser Bond’s side who ran out 5–2 winners.

A Keith Harmon penalty got the All Stars on the way before Damien Bailey (2), Ryan Dillon and Danny Berry all followed suit. Declan ‘Bomber’ Sharkey grabbed Setanta’s two goals.
