Local footballer Conor McDonald was on the scoresheet at the weekend, scoring Southern United’s opener in their 2–1 win over Waitakere United in the ISPS Handa Premiership in New Zealand!
The Blackrock man, who made his debut for Dundalk at the age of just 16 back in September 2011, enjoyed spells at Warrenpoint and Cliftonville before moving to the southern hemisphere at the end of January.
His debut proved to be an eventful one. The cultured midfielder missed a chance to draw Southern level in the 40th minute when he was put one on one with the United ‘keeper.
McDonald made amends midway through the second half, driving a fine effort into the far corner of the net to equalise before top scorer Garbhan Coughlan, formerly of Limerick, bagged the winner from the penalty spot.
Southern United currently sit fifth in the Premiership table, seven points behind Canterbury United who occupy the final play-off position. They play in Dunedin, the second-largest city in the South Island of New Zealand.
‘Chippy’ is just one of the Irish contingent at the club. Tony Whitehead also played with Limerick while Stephen Last, Danny Ledwith and Conor O’Keefe all signed for the club after spending the 2016 season with Wexford. Manager Paul O’Reilly is a Dubliner who worked at the FAI for 10 years.
