FOOTBALL | Classy Carlton hits a hat-trick as DkIT go through on penalties
Colleges FAI Rustlers Perpetual Cup Round One
GMIT Galway 4–4 DkIT | DkIT won 5–4 on penalties
After watching his Dundalk FC teammates lose on penalties at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday, Carlton Ubaezuonu played an integral part in DkIT’s shootout win over GMIT Galway in the Colleges FAI Rustlers Cup on Tuesday.
In a ding dong affair, Liam Burns’s side showed great character, coming from behind three times over the space of the 90 minutes.
Cian Flynn, another member of the Dundalk FC U19 team, cancelled out Kitizo Eqwuene’s strike for the hosts before Regis Abhiale restored GMIT’s lead.
A brace from Ubaezuono moved Dundalk ahead but they were staring down the barrel of defeat when Liam Flatley and Robert Carroll hit back for the Galway college.
Ubaezuono, however, popped up in the dying seconds to complete his hat-trick and force extra time and DkIT held their nerve in the shootout that followed, winning 5–4 to book their place amongst the final seven teams of the competition.
DKIT: Ronan Byrne, Gary Maher, Sam Reilly, Ciaran Cluskey Kelly, Roy Kierans, Deane Watters (Colm Gill), Cian Flynn, Conor McDonald, Carlton Ubaezuono, Jack O’Keefe, Blayne Burke (Conor Haggan).
