Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny is backing Georgie Poynton to play a major role for the Lilywhites in 2018 .

The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Bohemians, playing 25 times in the league, but has signed a new contract with Dundalk and is ready to duke it out for a place in Kenny’s first XI.

“I’m delighted Georgie is back with us,” the Lilywhites boss told Dundalk Sport on Monday. “He went away as a youth team player and has come back a man after having the year’s experience with Bohemians.

“He has also come back very fit and has trimmed down and got himself into very good condition. He has a good attitude and I’ve always had a lot of time for Georgie.

“He can play at right-back as well as in midfield. He can play as the holding player and he can attack. Bohs played him wide right at times last season so he has good attributes and can be a real asset to us this season.”

“I’m thankful for the opportunity that I got last year and I’m looking to kick on this year and hopefully I can break in to the team here,” said Poynton.

“It’s going to be difficult. I know that as we have some top midfielders at this club, but it’s a challenge I’m looking forward to and I can’t wait to get going.”
