CYCLING | Kilkenny holds off the chasing pack to win Round 10 of The Bike Station Cycling League

Dolan and Bingham cross the line together in race one

Round 10 of The Bike Station Cycling League saw the riders tackle a tough 45km course that finished on top of the Long Woman’s Grave, with the added twist of coming from the Glenmore side as opposed to the more traditional Ferryhill Road route.

In race two, Lorcan Kilkenny put on a masterful display to take a solo win. Kilkenny rode away from his fellow group two riders on the Carlingford Road. Behind him, group three caught up on the remains of group two and rode hard to try and bring him back.

However, on the long drag to the finish, they were unable to rein him in and Kilkenny took his first league win of the season. Group three riders, Jamie O’Hare and David Finnegan were next home in second and third respectively.

In race one, groups six and five came together and on the rise into Lordship three riders, Alan Bingham, Gary Gorman and Liam Dolan, broke away from them and bridged across to group four.

On the climb to the finish, Bingham and Dolan managed to get away and crossed the line together with arms held aloft to share the win. Gorman was swept up by the chasing bunch but had enough in his legs to take the sprint for third ahead of Sean Featherstone from Newry Wheelers.

Results round-up

Cuchulainn Cycling Club notched a few top 10 results in some open racing events last weekend. In Navan, Aaron McCann took fifth in the A4 race while in Banbridge, Liam Dolan claimed seventh in the A1 race.

National Championships

All eyes will turn to Wexford this weekend for the National Championships on June 24th.

In the elite race, which covers 180 km, Nicholas Roche will be favourite to defend his 2016 title and take the Irish champion’s jersey into the Tour de France the following weekend.

Liam Dolan will represent Cuchulainn Cycling Club in the Elite race while in the Masters 40 race, Alan Bingham will be looking to go one better than last year and claim the gold medal.

Bingham has been in outstanding form of late and notched a number of podiums in recent weeks, most notably a second place finish in the recent Red Hand race in Ballymena.
