BOXING | RECORD BREAKER! Amy wins her FOURTH European gold medal
Dealgan boxer is first Irish female boxer to win gold at U22 level

There were joyous scenes at Targu Jiu in Romania on Sunday afternoon as Dealgan Boxing Club’s Amy Broadhurst won her FOURTH European gold medal.
The Muirhevnamor native— who celebrated her 21st birthday on St Patrick’s Day — overcame Italian Francesa Martusciello — who she beat in 2015’s European Youth final — to capture the 60kg lightweight title.
It completes a unique hat-trick of gold medals at European Youth, Junior and now U22 level for ‘Baby Canelo’ while she also has a European Youth silver and EU Youth gold medal to her name, along with 15 Irish national titles.

“What a crazy week,” she wrote on her Facebook page afterwards. “Three tough fights coming against world and European medalists! It wasn’t easy but I can finally say I have my fourth European gold medal.
“It’s a proud moment being the only women besides Katie Taylor to hold this amount and to be the first women ever to win a gold medal at this tournament for Ireland. The bounce back was special. Now it’s time for a rest!”

Her parents Tony and Sheila were in Romania to witness the fight and he was, understandably, a proud man afterwards.
“Where do we start with this young woman’s achievements,” he wrote on his Facebook page. “Five European Championship finals on the trot and today she wins her fourth gold medal after unanimously defeating Italy’s U22 champion.

“She’s an amazing young woman, both inside and outside the boxing ring, and we couldn’t be more proud of her, whether she wins or loses, with how dedicated she is to her sport of boxing.
“She has given her life to boxing and even gave up her 21st birthday celebrations on St Patrick’s Day. Well done Baby Canelo, we love you loads and couldn’t be more proud of you!”
