Dundalk have pulled off one of the most eye-catching transfers in the club’s history by completing the signing of former Irish underage star Sean Murray from Danish club Vejle Boldklub.
The 25-year-old midfielder, who played over 100 games for Watford in the Championship, lined out for Dundalk in the Malone Cup win over Drogheda United less than two weeks ago.
Speaking after that game, Lilywhites head coach Vinny Perth said that Murray was the ‘perfect fit’ for Dundalk and just hours after his release from Vejle was confirmed, Murray was unveiled before the pre-season friendly with Longford Town at Oriel Park after signing what the club have described as a ‘long term’ deal.
“Ever since I came here and had a week of training and played a match, I wanted to get it done,” Murray told Dundalk Sport. “There were a few difficulties but I was always sure it was going to happen but I’m just delighted to sign the paper and be here.
“The people here, the staff, the players, have all made me feel very welcome from the first day. It’s always nice to go somewhere where you feel that you’re wanted. I don’t think it was like that at my old clubs. That was the main thing for coming here.”
Murray has been capped at age group up to U21 and was named FAI U21 International Player of the Year in 2014. He had a loan spell at Wigan Athletic, where he played with another Dundalk new boy, Jordan Flores, before moving to Swindon Town and Colchester United.
The Danish Premier League was his next port of call and he made 11 appearances for Vejle after moving to Scandinavia on last July. He signed a three-year deal with the club but they agreed to terminate his contract after he expressed a wish to return closer to home.
“It’s no secret that Sean started to search for opportunities for a club change over the winter,” said Jacob Krüger, technical manager at Vejle Boldklub. “He has not been given the playing time that he, and we, hoped for prior to the signing of the contract this summer and therefore this solution is best for all parties.
“We have nothing to put on Sean Murray’s efforts in everyday life and in battle. He has worked exemplary on the training track and pressed his fellow players into the competition for game minutes. Sean is entering his best football age and therefore he is now moving forward in his career. We wish Sean all the best in the future and thank him for the effort in Vejle Boldklub,” said Krüger.
