Dundalk first-team coach John Gill has backed his players to recover quickly from the 1–0 loss to St Patrick’s Athletic on Friday night.

A Daniel Cleary own goal gave the hosts all three points and condemned the Lilywhites to their first defeat of the season and, speaking to Dundalk Sport afterwards, conceded it was a night to forget.

“It’s disappointing”, he said. “We haven’t had too many of those the year. It’s hard to put your finger on it and we’ll need to look at the video. There’s certainly areas we can do better in, we know that. Maybe too many of our lads were off colour but we won’t be panicking.

“We’ll get this disappointment out of our system,” he added. “We’ve a double header next weekend and it’s a massive month. The players will be disappointed but the one thing this side has shown is bounce-backability and a resolute mentality.”

The defeat leaves the champions 10 points adrift of league leaders Shamrock Rovers, albeit with two games in hand, but Gill said Dundalk’s sole focus was on themselves.

“We can’t worry about Rovers,” he said. “The media and others are more worried about them than we are. We have to focus on ourselves. Would we like to be nearer to them? Yes we would but we’re not and we have to focus on what we do ourselves and our own business.”
