St Peter’s AC had five teams in action at the fantastic National Indoor Arena at the the National Sports Campus in Abbotstown for the Leinster Juvenile Indoor Relay Championships on Sunday.

The highlight for the club was the girls U14 team who ran a fantastic heat in which each of the four girls ran their hearts out to storm to victory and claim their place in the final.

The final was a very tight affair with very little between all six teams and unfortunately for the girls they narrowly missed out on medals. This was a great lesson to all the club athletes on the importance of substitutes on relay teams as all five girls ran excellently between the heat and final.

Judith Bell, Julie McLoughlin, Isabeal Fitzpatrick and Niamh Brady ran the heat but, unfortunately for Isabeal, she sustained an ankle injury and was replaced in the final by Ellie Smyth who fitted in equally as well.

The boys U14 team had a strong run too and just missed out on a final place by .25 of a second. The team was made up of Mark Litchfield, Cian Gorham, Ronan Deery and Sean Allen with Conor Litchfield waiting on the wings as a willing and able substitute if called upon.

The first team into action for the club was the girls U13 team who also added to the drama of the day as Lucy Brennan, who was running the anchor leg and battling for first position, fell badly and sustained a bad skin burn just a meter from the line.

Thankfully, the injury proved to be nothing too serious and Lucy was aided by her teammates Isabeal Fitzpatrick, Ellie Smyth and Dearbhla Allen.

The boys U15s also gave it their all and although they didn’t reach the final they gave a good account of themselves with Mark Litchfield, Calum Grant, Sean Allen and Rory McLoughlin performing well.

The youngest team in action on the day was the girls U12 team with Catherine Carey, Abby Fanning, Orla McLoughlin and Dearbhla Allen all gaining valuable experience of running in the National Indoor Arena.

Next up for the club is day four of the Leinster Indoor Championships which take place next Saturday in Athlone IT.
