ATHLETICS | St Peter’s U14 boys add another medal to their growing collection

Sarah shows up well in her first senior cross country race

The Louth Senior Championship Races in Drogheda on Sunday were preceded by the annual juvenile relays which brought the curtain down on the cross country season.

St Peter’s AC had just three teams in action at a really enjoyable and great event and credit must go to Drogheda and District AC for providing an excellent facility as hosts.

The highlight for the Dromiskin club was the boys U14 race where the St Peter’s boys started as slight favourites having won the county U14 Cross Country Championships back in October.

Mark Litchfield ran the first leg of the 4x500m event and laid the foundation for what was to come as he handed over to Calum Grant with a commanding lead.

Calum, who is enjoying his first cross country season, ran his heart out and managed to hold on to the lead before handing over to Cian Gorham.

The third leg proved to be a really tough affair as other clubs seemed to have strong runners on show but Cian managed to hold onto the lead and hand over to Seán Allen to run the anchor leg.

Seán had a battle on his hands but his experience shone threw and although he lost the lead at one stage, he regained it and stormed to victory.

The boys U12 race was another keenly contested affair where St Peter’s AC were once again in the medals.

Harry O’Reilly, Ben McKeown, Cormac McKeown and Padraic Tinnelly enjoyed a great battle with their neighbours Blackrock AC to hold onto third place and win much deserved medals.

The girls U10s also ran very bravely and although they didn’t manage to finish in the medal positions all four gained valuable experience and more importantly enjoyed the experience.

Orla McLoughlin ran a very strong leg to start and Emily O’Reilly, Mia Finnegan and Hannah O’Reilly performed very well.

In the seniors ladies race, St Peter’s had a representative in action for the first time in a number of years when Sarah McCann pulled on the club singlet and did very well in her first senior cross country race.

Attention turns to the Leinster Championships for uneven ages this weekend which takes place in Adamstown, Co Wexford.

The club will have athletes competing in both the girls and boys U11 and U13 races.
