ATHLETICS | St Peter’s AC veterans fly the flag in Donegal and Drogheda
As the club’s younger athletes prepare for the Louth Track and Field Championships this weekend, it was left to two of St Peter’s AC’s master athletes to carry the blue and black flag into action at the weekend.
Tom McGrane made the long journey to Donegal to take part in the Tir Chonail AC open meeting. Tom will go anywhere to compete in the sport he loves and is a great example to all the young athletes.
Competing in the shot putt event, Tom recorded a throw of 9.12m to finish in third place in the senior category, no mean feat considering he is over 50 years of age and could opt for the easier option of competing as a master athlete!
Andrew Rogers made the much shorter journey to Drogheda to compete in the annual Boyne 10K Race. A tough course wasn’t made any easier by the windy conditions but that didn’t deter Andrew who finished in a very respectable time of 46.18.
Cooley Credit Union Races
On Thursday evening last, the Cooley Credit Union Races for schools in North Louth took place at Bush Track. St Peter’s AC had two representatives in the shape of Mark and Conor Litchfield who attend Kilcurry NS.
Mark, who is enjoying a fantastic season, was again in fine form with an excellent display in the 600m while his brother Conor also performed well in the 80m sprint.
Training continues on Tuesday as athletes put the finishing touches on their preparations for the Louth Track and Field Championships which will take place over all three days of the weekend at the Lourdes Stadium in Drogheda and Bush Track in Glenmore.
Marathon Madness
Elsewhere, St Peter’s National School in Dromiskin held a Marathon Madness event which involved the whole school running a marathon in the form of relay.
This was a fantastic event and St Peter’s AC was glad to be of assistance and hope that the school will have more athletic events in the future.
Some of the club members were to the fore, aided by their willing classmates. Some of the students had never run in a competitive environment before and judging by their reactions all enjoyed it and hopefully some of them will take up athletics as a result.
Huge congratulations must go to the school and, in particular, principle Pat Mulligan and teacher David McComish who organised the event.
