ATHLETICS | St Gerard’s AC youngsters enjoy relay championship in Drogheda
The Louth Senior, Junior and Relay Cross Country Championships took place on a beautiful November day at Drogheda and District AC’s course at Newtown Cross just outside the town on Sunday last.
The relay event is a novel one for cross country and as well as providing great excitement, it gives an opportunity for some of those athletes down the pecking order to demonstrate their ability in a great team event.
Representing St Gerard’s AC were Nicole, Hayden and Caitlin Mulholland, Finn and Tara O’Connor, Lucy and Andrew Rosbotham, Hely and Carmen Rasandratana, Ben and Adam Eccles, Sophie McGinnity, Doireann Conlon, Ellie McVeigh, Cara Miele, Sarah Holmes, Tom Phillips, Ethan Mullen, Grainne Moran, Enya Silkena, Abaigh Moonan, Nicola McElroy and Rachel Culligan.
First up were the U10 girls with the club’s two teams performing well. The first squad of Doireann, Lucy, Sophie and Ellie ran powerfully to take a superb third place for bronze.
The second team of Carmen, Nicole, Cara and Sarah also did well on the day. For the boys U10 Tom, Finn, Adam and Ben gave their all in a highly competitive race to finish sixth.
The girls U12s fielded two teams on the day. The A team of Enya, Abaigh, Tara and Grainne ran another stormer to finish in the medals with a fine second place in a highly competitive contest.
The second squad of Nicola, Rachel, Lucy and Doireann ran a smashing race showing great quality and team spirit with a sixth place finish.
The boys U12 team of Hayden, Andrew, Hely and Ethan gave another bold showing. A powerful run from Hely in particular was the high point of a brave effort from the quartet.
Last into action was the ever reliable Caitlin Mulholland in the junior women’s 3k event. She put up another strong performance to take the victory and county championship.
