Kate O’Connor will represent her country in the Heptathlon and Long Jump after being named on the Athletics Ireland squad for the European U20 Championship in Italy from July 23th-26th.

The St Gerard’s AC star will head to Italy on the back of a third placed finish at the European Combined Events Team Championships which were held in Monzon, Spain, last weekend.

The 16-year-old St Vincent’s student navigated the hurdles, high jump, shot putt and 200m on the first day of events, leaving her in fifth place.

Day two saw Kate compete in her specialist event, the javelin, as well as the long jump and the 800m where a blistering time of 2:17.30 moved her into third position.

Her final points tally of 5,632 — a Personal Best — was just 37 short of the Irish record, and took her well within the qualifying marks for both the European Junior and U23 Championships.

Kate is also eligible for for next year’s Commonwealth Games in Australia as her grandmother hails from Northern Ireland.

She will head to Grosseto in Italy as part of a 40-strong Irish squad which includes former Blackrock AC star Gina Akpe-Moses who will compete in the 100m and 4x100m.
