ATHLETICS | Kate starts 2019 with a bang by breaking her own Irish pentathlon record!

St Gerard’s AC star crowned English senior and U23 champion

Local athlete Kate O’Connor started 2019 with a bang by breaking her own Irish pentathlon record yet again at the England Athletics Indoor Combined Events Championships in Sheffield.

Making her return to the track after a nine-month lay-off, the St Gerard’s AC star finished up with a points tally of 4174, 24 more than the record she set in Estonia last year. Kate finished 154 points ahead of second-placed Ellen Barber and a further nine clear of bronze medallist Lucy Turner to be crowned English senior and U23 champion.

Sitting in fifth place after the opening two events of the 60m hurdles and high jump, the latter of which saw her record a winning jump of 1.74m, Kate ramped it up by recording Personals Bests in the shot put (13.27m) and long jump (5.98m) before closing the day out with a second-place finish in the 800m.

The 18-year-old is currently studying for her Leaving Cert at St Vincent’s and will begin a scholarship at the University of Texas later this year.
