ATHLETICS | Busy weekend for Glenmore
Club’s relay teams take home plenty of medals
Glenmore AC had a busy weekend which began last Saturday when a group of athletes travelled to the Lourdes Stadium in Drogheda for the Louth Pre-Championships with many of the club’s young athletes competing for the first time.
First up were the U8 girls in the 60m where Zoe White took the gold position and Aoife McDonald bronze. Gillan Touhy also made the final and Emily Connolly finished strong in her heat.
Sophie Cummiskey represented the U9 girls, running well while in the U10 girls 80m there was a large field of athletes who ran over four heats.
Katie McDonald finished first in the final with Jessica White, Emma McCarragher, Grace Keenan and Ruby Steeples also making the final. Leah Dunne, Aine O’Reilly, Minna Lennon, Aoife Keenan and Ella Connolly competed well in their heats.
Mia Ashby and Ellen Callan ran great heats in the U11 80m while Lucy White, Orlaith Daly, Ava Ashby, Chloe McCarragher, Anna Dawson, Sarah Mallon, Aoife Magee and Megan Steeples competed across four heats in the U12 80m before Lucy finished first in the final.
U13 girls Ava Brady, Lisa Conlon and Emily Tuohy competed strongly in their heat while Nicole Barry took third position in the U15 girls 100m event. Katelyn Quinn finished second in the U17 100m and Hannah Stewart finished third in the U19 100m.
In the distance events, Zoe White took her second gold medal of the day with Gillian Tuohy taking the silver medal and Aoife McDonald and Emily Connolly finishing just outside the medals in the U8 300m. Sophie Cummiskey ran a strong 300m race in the U9 event.
The U10, U11 and U12 girls all competed well in their 500m and 600m events with Lisa Conlon and Ava Brady running well in the 600m. Katie Conlon led the field in the U15 800m, claiming the gold medal while Katie Mallon took silver in the U17 800m and Hannah Stewart third in the U19 800m.
The U8 boys were were represented by Luke and Oisin McGovern who were competing in their first championship while Oisin McCoy ran a strong heat in the U9 boys.
U10 boys Cian Magee and Craig Tuohy made the final with clubmates Josh McAteer and Elliot Nichols running well in their heats. Aaron Hanratty and Sean Holland also ran strongly in the U11 heats.
Cormac McCoy, Fionn O’Reilly and Shane Gallagher also competed well in the U12 80m heats and Cillian Keenan, James Dunne and Ethan Canavan ran great U13 heats.
Daragh Brady finished 3rd in the U15 100m but Eoin McCann just missed out on a medal in the U16 100m, followed by Ciaran Flynn and Niall Brady. Craig Kane finished strong in the U18 event.
In the distance events, Elliot Nichols took a silver medal in the U10 500m and Craig Kane silver in the U16 800m. Glenmore AC’s boys competed strongly across all distances in their events albeit finishing outside the medals.
In the field events, the club claimed more medals with Zoe White finishing second in the javelin, Katie McDonald third in the long jump, Nicole Barry third in the long jump, Katelyn Quinn second, Katie Mallon third in the shot putt and Craig Kane first is his shot putt.
The day finished with the relays where Glenmore AC competed well across all ages with multiple teams. Medals went to the U9 girls team, who took gold. The U10 boys won bronze, U11 girls a silver, U16 boys a silver and the U19 mixed team a gold medal position.
Well done to all the club’s athletes and supporters who attended on the day. Next up is the Cooley Credit Union Schools Races on Thursday next at Bush Track with the first event taking place at 6.30pm.
Training continues on Tuesday nights at 7pm at Bush Track with the focus now on the Louth Championships over the weekend of May 5th-7th.
