There was another memorable moment for local athletics on Tuesday when St Gerard’s AC’s Patience Jumbo-Gula won a bronze medal in the 100m at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Hungary.

Patience, who only turned 16 last week, qualified for the final by winning both her heat and semi-final on Monday. Her time of 11.74 in the semi ranks her as the ninth fastest in Ireland this year — and 20th on the Irish all time list!

There was very little between the top three in the final with Mike Bisschops of the Netherlands (11.52) and Emese Takacs of Hungary (11.58) just edging the Dundalk girl (11.58) to gold and silver.

Her bronze win comes just four days after her former St Gerard’s AC clubmate Gina Akpe-Moses won a gold medal in the 100m at the European U20 Athletics Championships in Italy while another member of the club, Kate O’Connor, set a youth record in the heptathlon at the same event.
