ARCHERY | Ardee club CuChulainn Archers win medals in two competitions

Arrowsmiths representing Ardee-based club, CúChulainn Archers, enjoyed success in two separate competitions in Dublin and Kildare over the past seven days.

CúChulainn Archers, a club based in west Louth, sent a contingent to the capital last Wednesday where members contested a national meeting at Sports Campus Ireland in Blanchardstown.

Keen to emulate the Olympians who dominated the sport in Paris and the markets on various Irish betting sites, archers from CúChulainn’s competed in events for both experienced archers and amateurs in Dublin.

Distances in those events ranged from 20 metres all the way up to 70 metres for the more experienced entrants, though there was something for archers of all levels to enjoy at the informal gathering.

Louth’s Paul McCooey finished in an impressive 5th place in what was his first full-distance tournament, while Christabel Sing Chze Chai picked up a silver medal for her accurate efforts in the Compound Beginner Women’s niche.

Elsewhere, it was also silver for Michael Mullooly, who represented CúChulainn Archers with distinction in the Senior Barebow Men category, while Éamonn Laramie collected a superb gold medal over a tighter distance in the Beginner Barebow Men’s event.

A few days later, CúChulainn Archers sent two of its best to Athy to compete in an AW 1440 event at Harbour House Archery Club.

With swirling, blustery weather making conditions difficult, both archers managed to make the podium in Athy. First, Eamonn Rogers got his hands on gold in the Senior Compound Men category, while Brendan Forde also delivered the goods in the Senior Recurve Men’s event and brought a silver medal back to Louth.

Interest in archery in County Louth is expected to spike after the conclusion of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. South Korea’s Kim woo-Jin, who was listed among the favourites on sports betting apps before the competition, won the gold medal in the men’s individual event in France, while his compatriot, Lim Si-hyeon collected gold in the corresponding women’s category.

South Korea also secured gold medals in the team events, in both the men’s and women’s categories.
